POLIMI
Politecnico di Milano, founded in 1863, is Italy’s leading scientific and technological university, internationally recognized for excellence in engineering, architecture, and design. With over 48,000 students across seven campuses, it combines world-class education with cutting-edge research through 12 departments and more than 280 research facilities. Its strong research capacity, extensive infrastructure, and numerous European projects make it a key contributor to technological innovation and scientific advancement.
Project activities
POLIMI plays a central role in the BSI project, leading the design and engineering of the Bio Sponge Iron process. It contributes its extensive expertise in metallurgical process analysis and optimization, particularly in the characterization and valorization of steelmaking residues. Within the project, POLIMI is responsible for the design of the smelting furnace and heat exchanger, supported by comprehensive simulations using mathematical, numerical, and thermodynamic models. It also leads the process concept development and basic engineering, while participating in experimental campaigns for process validation and optimization.
Additionally, POLIMI contributes to the characterization of reduced iron and melting tests to evaluate the suitability of sponge iron for electric arc furnace applications, along with techno-economic evaluations and life cycle assessments to ensure the process's feasibility and sustainability.
