BSN
BSN was founded in 1996 and is located in the immediate vicinity of Badische Stahlwerke GmbH (BSW) in Kehl am Rhein, the only electric steelworks in south-west Germany.
BSN specializes in the sustainable processing and commercialization of steelmaking by-products, delivering high-quality materials through efficient operations and rigorous quality control.
Project activities
BSN will contribute to the validation of the BSI technology by supplying rolling mill scale as an alternative iron-bearing feedstock, enabling the assessment of process flexibility with iron ore, mill scale, and their blends.
In the final project phase, the produced Bio Sponge Iron will be tested in a real industrial Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) at BSN. Melting trials with different sponge iron-to-scrap ratios will assess melting behaviour, slag formation, process stability, energy efficiency, and product quality, ultimately validating the suitability of Bio Sponge Iron as a partial scrap substitute for EAF steelmaking.
BSN will also lead the reporting of the reduced iron properties and industrial melting test performance, supporting the assessment of the technology’s potential for future industrial deployment.
